Functions


Loan schemes

There are different possibilities to finance the cost of living via loan schemes. They are directed primarily towards Germany nationals and nationals of EU member states. Candidates of other nationalities are only eligible if they have a German baccalaureate ("Abitur") and permanent residence status in Germany.

The following online portals are in German only.

BAföG Subsidy (Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz)

  • What is BAföG? BAföG is a German state aid. Half of the amount is paid out as an interest-free loan, the other half as a subsidy.
  • Interest? Interest-free.
  • Application: Written application online or at the Office for Financial Support.

BAföG Bank Loan (BAföG Bankdarlehen)

  • For what?To finance the living expenses of students after interruption of studies or a change of subject, as support for the completion of the final period of studies, or forfurther studies.
  • Interest?Interest-bearing.
  • Application: Written application online or at the Office for Financial Support.

Education Loan (Bildungskredit)

  • For what? To finance the living expenses in the last semesters of the study program, to pay for extra costs such as a study semester abroad, for internships, special working materials or an excursion.
  • Interest? Interest-bearing.
  • Application: Written application with the German Federal Administration Office (via mail: Bundesverwaltungsamt, 50728 Köln) or through the online loan portal.

KfW Student Loan (KfW-Studienkredit)

  • Requirements? You must be under the age of 30.
  • Interest?Interest-bearing.
  • Application: Written application with KfW through the online loan portal.
