An extensive number of institutions and foundations offer scholarships.
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Germany’s national agency for the support of international academic cooperation, is probably the most prominent organization to award competitive, merit-based grants for use toward study and/or research in Germany. They offer financial support to over 55,000 individuals per year.
These foundations typically choose scholarship holders who share their socio-political views.
Corporate-affiliated foundations often award their funding based on a candidate’s subject of study, research emphasis, social attitude, or purely on his/her achievements.
Social institutions, such as the large churches in Germany, offer their own scholarships often with a strong focus on financial hardship.
