Dealing with the subject of women in leadership positions, Prof. Eagly noted that in many countries women are increasingly gaining access to leadership positions and proving to be effective leaders in this capacity. They are helped by the fact that today’s manager stereotype is less male-oriented that it was a few decades ago. Yet most people nonetheless still prefer men as their superiors. Women also continue to be prevented both explicitly and implicitly from assuming leadership roles. This mixture of alleged advantages and disadvantages of being a woman testifies for one to the progress made toward equal rights. It also documents the urgent need for further progress toward this goal.
“Although women, compared with men, correspond more to today’s gold standard of transformational leadership, as statistics clearly demonstrate, they still find it strangely harder to reach positions in which they can demonstrate these qualities. Unlike men, who compared with women frequently tend toward counterproductive leadership styles such as by punishment, management by exception, or laissez-faire.”
Professor Eagly has penned many influential books and had various articles published in renowned peer-reviewed journals such as the Psychological Bulletin, the Journal of Applied Psychology, or the Leadership Quarterly.
