Professor Dr. Niels Van Quaquebeke appointed as Teach First Mentor

Professor Dr. Niels Van Quaquebeke has been appointed as Teach First Mentor. Teach First Deutschland, a German non-profit organization, recruits outstanding university graduates ("Fellows") for a two-year full-time teaching commitment in schools in disadvantaged communities. Fellows are paired up with Mentors who support their personal and professional development.

Teach First Deutschland’s vision is a society in which all children and youth receive an excellent education – regardless of the circumstances into which they are born. Fellows are active both inside and outside the classroom to improve students’ achievement and career opportunities. In the long run, programme alumni take on leadership positions in business, politics, and society and draw on their in-depth insights to advocate greater educational equality in Germany.

The Teach First Deutschland Mentoring program in Hamburg brings together Fellows in their 2nd year of teaching with experienced executives from a wide range of career paths, as for example Jürgen Dege-Rüger (Head of Bildungsoffensive Elbinseln), Dr. Jesco Kreft (Managing Director, Hamburger Stiftung für Wirtschaftsethik), Knut Möller (Managing Director, Youth For Understanding), Anna v. Münchhausen-Frey (Copy Editor in Chief Die ZEIT), Joachim Schlage (Managing Director, Schlange & Co)

Prof. Dr. Niels Van Quaquebeke has been appointed to pair with Fellow Valentin Altenburg, who is teaching at an elementary school in Hamburg-Neu-Allermöhe. Mentors support Fellows in their personal and professional development and at the same time gain an insight into the challenging job of their mentees. “It is an invaluable addition to our program and our mission to have inspiring leadership personalities, such as Prof. Van Quaquebeke, pass on their experience to our Fellows”, says Lena Meyer, Regional Director of Teach First Deutschland in Hamburg, where currently 23 Fellows are working in elementary and secondary schools.”
