Economists Sail the Alster

Sailing regatta

At a different kind of Open Day, KLU was recently on the Outer Alster visiting its partner, the North German Sailing Association (NRV). Around 40 current, former and (potential) future members of the KLU community, including special guest and NRV Olympic sailor Thomas Plößel, met in an animated exchange on sailboats and pontoons.

Sunshine, blue skies, and moderate wind provided dreamy conditions for the first KLU-NRV Meet and Greet Regatta in mid-June. It was many KLU representatives’ first experience sailing the Alster. Talented young skippers from the NRV Youth Team as well as KLU alumnus and veteran NRV sailor, Nico Schmidt, confidently navigated crews of professors, staff, and current and former KLU students on sporty J/70 sailboats through the water.

After a rousing team competition to kick things off, organized and launched by NRV manager Klaus Lahme, a friendly exchange in a casual atmosphere took center stage for all involved – including plenty of hot tips and personal experiences of studying at KLU for interested NRV youngsters.

The event once again enjoyed the friendly support of Hamburg’s Pollmann Stiftung, a long-standing KLU partner and supporter of the NRV Olympic Team, which Thomas Plößel, double medal winner at the Olympic Games in Rio and Tokyo, brought to prominence.

It was a successful opening for a special event, again highlighting KLU’s bonds with its alumni and the Hamburg sporting scene.

KLU is an official “partner university of high performance sport” represented by the Olympiastützpunkt Hamburg/Schleswig-Holstein and Allgemeiner Deutscher Hochschulsport Verband (German University Sports Federation) and supports top athletes with a special sports program – both financially and by allowing for the balancing act between competitive sports and academic studies via flexible solutions in scheduling and exams.
