New Research Project at KLU: Hypernetwork of German Logistics (HeGeL)
Together with five research partners, KLU is exploiting the potential of Hypernetworks in Freight Transports and Logistics in the new research project "HeGel" (Hypernetwork of German Logistics). The project is sponsored by the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV). On March 22nd, the project will start with an official Kick-off event.
In light of the continuing increase in freight transport and simultaneous rise in demand for sustainable transport, there is an urgent need for transparent, up-to-date, and consistent information on the available transport options. An incomplete, outdated or incompatible database can adversely affect the utilization and punctuality of transports, and lead to eco-efficient intermodal transport chains being ignored in the planning phase.
How hypernetworks can boost the efficiency, sustainability, and robustness of freight transport and logistics
Transparency of all available transport options and especially their combinations in intermodal transport – aspects that the project focuses on in the form of hypernetworks – allows firms to plan transports more efficiently, sustainably, and robustly. "In order to achieve a data-driven optimization of sustainability and efficiency in transport networks, we need data transparency. At the same time, this allows for transport planning with more precise time windows” explains project coordinator Dr. Ole Hansen from 4flow AG. During the project, data is being gathered, and various modelling methods are being investigated in order to supplement the available data for representing hypernetworks.

On March 22nd, 2022, the project partners invite experts and the interested public to discuss the project and the potential of hypernetworks in Freight Transport and Logistics.

Additional information
The HEGEL (Hypernetwork of German Logistics) project, sponsored by the BMDV and coordinated by the TÜV Rhineland, was launched this January. In the course of the three-year project, under the leadership of 4flow AG (4flow), experts from Kühne Logistics University (KLU), the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Institute of Transport Research, Ubilabs, and the Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits (IIS) will chiefly focus on accumulating, inspecting and processing the available data, and on empirically gathering data that has been missing in order to close previously identified gaps. In turn, the project partners 4flow, 4PL Intermodal, and Ubilabs will concentrate on translating the re-search findings into new prototypical services with practical benefits for firms in order to enhance the efficiency, sustainability, and robust-ness of supply chains.
In terms of establishing the requisite database, the project will draw on available information from the mCLOUD and a range of other sources. In addition, it will engage in regular exchanges with related mFUND initiatives, particularly in the areas of intermodal research and sus-tainable transport research.
As part of the innovation initiative mFUND, the HEGEL project will re-ceive total funding of 2,128,145 euros from Germany’s Federal Minis-try for Digital and Transport (BMDV).
