11:00 a.m. The foyer is crowded. President Professor Thomas Strothotte welcomes the guests in KLU’s Golden Egg, the auditorium that immediately catches your eye when you enter the foyer. “Cool,” said Andreas from Kiel. “Exciting architecture,” added his father. In a series of short videos, KLU presents itself. This time, Career Services and the International Office are in the spotlight. Services for students are a major focus at KLU. Extensive career advice, internships with renowned companies and a semester at one of KLU’s more than 50 partner universities worldwide are standard. Two professors present the KLU degree programs: a B.Sc. in Management, a M.Sc. in Global Logistics and a M.Sc. in Management.
The prospective students learn why it pays to invest in their education and that they should not let tuition fees daunt them. Excellent academics who teach novel research findings already years before they appear in standard textbooks are an advantage in and of themselves. Their focus on creating new knowledge rather than simply applying conventional wisdom provides a competitive advantage for the students. And the student-to-teacher ratio of 10:1 has no equal at German business faculties. “I also find it interesting that 50% of the students come from countries around the globe,” said Eva from Hamburg. The interactive teaching methods applied in small groups offer another advantage: “You will be able to choose your preferred electives and you will not face any delays due to capacity constraints. Thus, our students are actually able to complete their B.Sc. degrees within six semesters, including a semester abroad and a three-month-internship,” explained Prof. Dr. Christian Barrot, Academic Director of the bachelor’s program at KLU. Furthermore, the extensive support provided by the KLU Career Center enables a smooth transition into the first job after graduation.
One student in the bachelor’s program and one in the master’s report on the personal experiences they encountered at KLU. One alumna, who came to study global logistics at KLU and is now heading a logistics department at H&M, tells why it was “the best decision I have ever made.” All three stay to answer the prospective students’ many questions. In the meantime, new guests have arrived. The program begins all over again.
3 p.m. One look at the list of participants shows that the Open Day 2015 at KLU was a complete success: Close to a 100% of the prospective students attending sign-up for the KLU mailing list to receive the details on the application and selection process. The musicians are packing up their things and talking about how much they look forward to the next Open Day 2016 at KLU. They would love to play here again.
