Applied Research Methods

Degree program: MSc Management

The objective of this module is to familiarize students with the process of academic research and to enable them to conduct their own research project, particularly with regard to their thesis.

 

Over the course students will be introduced to the scientific approach and alternative approaches to research, the defining and refining of problems, learn how to conduct a critical literature review as well as how to develop theories and hypotheses. Emphasis will also be laid on ethics in empirical work, on data collection through interviews, observation and experiments, at the same time properties of these individual data types will be reviewed. This will be followed by an introduction to the measurement of variables and data sampling. The module also includes lectures on scholarly writing, and on writing and editing productivity.

 

The lectures are designed to be interactive with in-class exercises and workshops. Besides the lectures, special emphasis will be laid on learning the appropriate methods in order to investigate different research questions, which can be applied into decision-making problems in the business world as well.

 

The module involves a project spanning the course duration aimed at identifying and developing interesting research opportunities and crystallizing them in a research outline.
