International Economics

Degree programs: MSc Logistics & SCM, MSc Management

Globalization and free trade are on the retreat, and the cry for trade barriers is getting louder worldwide. Politicians argue that – after some time – free trade ends up in “unfair trade” with disadvantages for your own nation: Lower wages, unemployment, tax evasion, or the erosion of environmental standards are the alleged result. International Economics addresses students interested in these hot topics. To be more specific, this course uses concepts from both “monetary trade theory” and “real trade theory” to analyze the environment of internationally active firms.

The organization of the course content is as follows:

• The balance of payment and other variables of an open economy

• Trade theories: Gravity, Ricardo, Heck’scher Ohlin

• Trade policy

• Globalization and multinational enterprises

• Currency exchange markets

• Protecting against exchange rate volatility
