Leading Complex Projects

The course covers strategies to deal with complexity in projects and organizations in general. To this end, the course includes three main steps:

In the first step, participants identify the sources of complexity, which is the necessary precondition for understanding the requirements for managing complexity. Furthermore, the discussion will include both the challenges of handling complexity as well as the advantages and opportunities that come with complexity.

In the second step, the group will balance the advantages and disadvantages of different management principles such as contracts, structure, and leadership in the background of complex environments. The importance of soft skills for managing complex projects will be particularly discussed.

In the third step, instruments around hierarchies, networks, communication, and experiments for dealing with complexity will be discussed.
