Abstract:

The container shipping industry experienced in the past 3 years an unprecedented series of short business cycles and yet again, the outlook for the years to come seems gloomy. Consequently, all industry stake holders need to adjust strategy constantly in order to cope with the changing market developments. 
Thomas Lütjes lecture assesses the past years and attempts to provide an overview on the current general market situation. Emphasis is placed on the effects on the container terminal industry in general and in particular on how HHLA Container Terminals try to respond actively to the changing market environment. The lecture will conclude with a set of trends and innovations which will influence the industry in the years to come.

Biography:

In 2001 Thomas Lütje joined HHLA as Director Sales and Marketing for the Container division. Since 2008 he is Managing Director of HHLA Container Terminals GmbH. 
In 1980, after qualifying as a shipping clerk, he started his career with the German shipping line Hapag-Lloyd AG, where he worked for 15 years in different positions, including head of operations for the Far Eastern Freight Department.
In 1995 he joined the German terminal and logistics company Gerd Buss as Managing Director, before becoming Managing Director of Hansetrans warehousing and forwarding in 1999. 
Beside his function as Managing Director of HHLA Container Terminals GmbH Mr. Lütje is Chairman of the Board of Hamburg Hafen Marketing e.V. and Head and founding member of the research group “Profiling of the location Hamburg” with Logistik Initiative Hamburg.
Thomas Lütje, 51 years, lives near Hamburg, is married and has five children.
