Challenges and preliminary solutions in global supply chains in the High Tech Industry on the example of a sem

Abstract

The semiconductor industry is one of the most challenging industries in the world. Complex global manufacturing process in combination with short product life cycles in a volatile market at fierce combination has been the characteristic from the very beginning. More and more other industries today are moving in the same direction.

An insight in the supply chain of the semiconductor industry on the example of Germanys #1 semiconductor company is given. The presentation is based on the SCOR Model of APICS Supply Chain Council. The core Processes according SCOR are Plan, Source, Make, Deliver, Return and the Enabler Processes.

Preliminary answers on how such an environment can be managed are elaborated. Examples of globally aligned processes from demand entry, capacity alignment, Available to promise generation, allocation and order confirmation is given. Those are implemented with best-of-breed IT Tools and a superior workforce, which is continuously educated and trained via the Supply Chain Academy, ensures a flexible execution.

The great challenge for industries containing semiconductors coming from the bullwhip effect – an amplification of demand signals along the supply chain – is discussed and countermeasures via collaboration are proposed.   

Biography

Hans is Principal Supply Chain of Infineon Technologies AG and their responsible for supply chain innovations. He holds degrees in Physics from Germany and is Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Oregon State University.

In his 30 years of experience in the Semiconductor Industry he was granted managing and consulting Positions at development, manufacturing, and for the global Supply Chains. He is engaged in research activities in operations, End-to-End collaborations and for sustainable supply chains. He collaborates with Universities and Associations around the globe like TUM (Technical University Munich), ETH Zurich, NUS Singapore, ZVEI (Zentralverband der Deutschen Electro-industry), INFORMS MASM (Industry Advisor) and AKJ (Arbeitskreis Just in Time with the major German car manufacturer and Tier 1 suppliers).

Hans is Board member of camLine Holding AG, an IT company providing software for quality. He is a Board member of APICS SCC, leads the European chapter and coordinated the global chapters.

Hans teaches Supply Chain Management at Universities, supervises Bachelor, Master and PhD students in supply chain and initiates innovative academic curriculums – like a long distance supply chain program with the University of Limerick / Ireland.

He is a frequent speaker at supply chain events around the globe.
