“Cloud Based” Collaboration Platform for Transport & Logistics Business Networks

Abstract:

Modern transport and logistics operations are highly distributed activities spanning country boundaries with each of the business partners acting independently with the aim of optimizing their individual supply and production chains without concern for the overall, end-to-end supply chain. Current ICT solutions in the transport logistics domain have been developed to support this closed network focus and provide only limited support for inter-organizational data and process integration. This means that complex inter-organizational integration and coordination activities must be accomplished through ad hoc ICT or manual efforts. 
The lack of robust and trustworthy inter-organizational integration and collaboration systems hampers business efficiency and optimization for all parties involved in the planning and execution of international freight movements. This evening’s discussion will focus on the FInest logistics collaboration platform, which is a software services approach based on rapidly emerging ICT technologies provided through Future Internet technologies including software services, connected sensors and devices, and cloud computing. The FInest logistics collaboration platform is being developed to provide: 

• Information integration from legacy and third party systems enabled through a service-based integration layer that works with established business standards; 
• A collaboration manager for transport and logistics business networks that supports the planning and execution of multi-modal international transport from a global perspective with message-based coordination among the involved business partners;  
• Integrated techniques for transport monitoring and tracking on the basis of data integration from sensor systems and smart item technologies;  
• Role-based views for the individual participants in the transport and logistics business networks along with integrated, comprehensive security and privacy management for access control to confidential information; and  
• Ubiquitous connectivity for allowing access from anywhere at any time via any device.
