Green Freight in Asia from Transition to Transformation?

Abstract

Is Green Freight part of the transition stage or has it reached a transformation stage in Asia. This presentation tries to answer this critical question. Freight transport is growing more rapidly than income in Asia. Between 2000 and 2050, road freight volume in Asia is set to grow by more than 3 times the global average. Growing freight volumes would have implications on emissions. Freight contributes a disproportionate share of air pollution and carbon emissions. With raise in income levels, freight emission intensity of Asian countries is set to decrease slowly. However, with raising externalities, it is important to understand if Asian countries would leapfrog this transition stage and transform its freight sector. Examples from different countries, cities and modes are highlighted to understand the status and future of freight in Asia.

About the presenter

Sudhir Gota specializes on environmental issues related to transport and has extensive experience in transport data crunching and on green freight. He has more than twelve years of experience in research and developing and managing projects related to transportation and environment. He has been instrumental in bringing “green freight” and “energy efficiency” into agenda in Asia through research and advocacy. He was awarded Lee Schipper Scholarship for year 2013. He is an active researcher and has co-written a book on low carbon transport, several publications and policy briefs on transport and environmental issues challenging conventional practices and advocating innovative solutions.
