Abstract:

Beneath any formal organization lies a web of relationships between organizational members. These informal networks cut formal boundaries, persist during times of organizational change, and form a source of power, but most of all, they are not under the control of managers.
In this inaugural lecture, I will argue that social networks are powerful forces that either increase or hinder organizational performance but are hidden from managers. Managers who want to reap the benefits of social networks and lift their organization to new performance levels need to understand the role of social networks in their own organizations.
This talk builds on the latest insights in the fields of sociology, psychology, and organization science. I will refer to examples from our day-to-day life and data from my own research to illustrate my arguments. First, I will talk about the power of networks. I will then highlight some of the difficulties with the perception of social interactions. Finally, I will conclude with examples of scientific social network methods to deal with practical problems.
This talk addresses a general audience. No pre-existing knowledge is required.
