We cordially invite you to a public lecture on gender differences with the renowned scientist Prof. Roy Baumeister from University of Queensland (AUS). The evening will have two parts. First, Prof. Baumeister will start off with a keynote covering his extensive and interdisciplinary research on gender differences (ca. 18:00-19:30). This will be followed by drinks and snacks in the foyer, where Prof. Niels Van Quaquebeke and Prof. Christian Tröster will facilitate some open space themes around the topic for those who are inspired to stay and discuss (19:30-20:30). While attendance is free of charge, we only have limited seats available. So, please register beforehand.

This talk provides a radical new perspective on gender differences in motivation, personality, and achievement, including recasting gender politics. An elaborate interdisciplinary argument drawing from biology, psychology, economics, and related fields contends that men and women are more often partners than enemies and that cultural systems exploit both genders, usually in different ways. It points toward an alternative to the currently dominant view of gender politics in which men are oppressors and women are victims. It is based on my 2010 book, which is also now available in German translation.

On the speaker

Roy F. Baumeister is one of the world’s most prolific and influential psychologists. He has published well over 500 scientific articles and more than 30 books. In 2013, he received the highest award given by the Association for Psychological Science, the William James Fellow award, in recognition of his lifetime achievements. He is currently the Eppes Eminent Scholar and a professor of psychology at Florida State University, and he holds distinguished visiting professorships at King Abdulaziz University in Saudi Arabia and VU University of Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

Although Roy made his name with laboratory research, his recognition extends beyond the narrow confines of academia. His 2011 book Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength (with John Tierney) was a New York Times bestseller. He has appeared on television shows such as Dateline NBC and ABC’s 20/20, as well as on PBS, National Public Radio, and countless local news shows. His work has been covered or quoted in the The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, The Economist, Newsweek, TIME, Psychology Today, Self, Men’s Health, Businessweek, and many other outlets.
