Abstract:

As organizations and societies are growing more diverse, the management of diversity at work also gains in importance. Yet, our understanding of diversity’s effects seems to be lagging behind these developments somewhat, and accordingly so does our understanding of how to manage these effects in practice. In this talk, I take stock of what we know about the effects of diversity from academic research and how this speaks to the management of diversity in organizations. In doing so, I outline how diversity is a double-edged sword with both the potential to bring value-added to teams and organizations and the potential to disrupt team and organizational functioning. Accordingly, effective management of diversity requires that we speak to both the beneficial and to the disruptive side of diversity. In these respects, building on the current state of the science, I discuss the role of leadership and organizational climate.
