Abstract

Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) is the globally leading provider of solutions and services for the print media industry. The company offers comprehensive solutions in the fields of sheetfed offset printing and digital printing. With its own sales and service branches and via partners, Heidelberg reaches its customers in around 170 countries worldwide, generating Group sales of around € 2.7 billion in the 2012/2013 financial year. Around 40 percent of sales are generated from services, consumables and service parts. 
An increasing number of printing companies run their factories around the clock. Uptime of equipment is a key success factor for customers. Therefore an outstanding performance of the service organization is a major competitive advantage. The challenge is to ensure such high service levels under a tight business environment as the print media industry has come under economical pressure within the last few years.
Within this context the presentation will deliver insights into Heidelberg’s way in changing the worldwide service parts supply chain strategy and the step by step implementation. Two main objectives have been in focus during this project - achieving best-in-class service parts availability for customers and service technicians, as well as significantly reducing cost and networking capital. There will also be time for discussing current and future challenges and opportunities of service parts business.

Biography

Michael Windler is Senior Vice President Global Service Parts and Logistics at Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG. Besides his responsibility for business results generated by service parts sales, he is in charge of operating Heidelberg’s worldwide Service Parts Hub network. This includes functions such as warehousing and distribution, order management, inventory management, supply chain optimization, service parts assembly and quality. 
After an apprenticeship with MTU Friedrichshafen, he has studied Engineering Cybernetics at Stuttgart University and at University of Wisconsin-Madison (USA); accompanied by project assignments on workflow optimization at Daimler. 
He joined Heidelberg as a member of an internal consultancy team introducing the concept of Total Quality Management. Since 2000 he has been working in different management positions within Heidelberg’s service parts organisation - such as provider management, supply & demand management, sales & order management for Asian, Middle East and African markets. Within these years the supply chain strategy has been significantly changed towards a network approach. In this context he had the project lead to optimize the service parts supply chain for sales region Asia Pacific.
