Abstract

Social media are only one of the vectors that are changing the ways we use media, and the ways in which they affect power relationships in society. Perhaps even more important are the media controlled by stakeholder groups, from Greenpeace to vegetarian activists and consumer forums. By placing transparency over objectivity, and solutions over questions, they are changing our expectations of media. By altering information flows between actors in organisational conflicts, these media change outcomes. They are also forcing a reassessment of conventional wisdom, in particular that control of "hegemonic" mainstream media equals control of opinion. In this lecture we will look at the ways in which stakeholder media exert power over organisational agendas, and how they are changing the definition of the news that matters.
