Program content

KLU International Study Trips are designed to provide participants with an overview of current challenges facing not only today’s, but moreover tomorrow’s issues. They will gain a deeper understanding of the topics during interactive sessions, current trends and their impact on economy, business, infrastructure, environment, media, technology, law and society. The participants will be exposed to approaches that encourage them to think creatively and systemically to embrace the changes occurring in the industry and develop novel approaches for their studies and their own careers.

Furthermore, we may include topics on the role of the port and port operations, which can also include a (guided) visit to the port of Hamburg, the third largest port in Europe. The program may also include visits to selected companies, such as the Airbus assembly plant or – upon request – businesses of other related sectors.

To complement the academic and professional component, we offer a social program compiling of dinners, barge cruises and walking tours of the city. Additionally, we are happy to inquire about special events or activities tailored to the group’s dynamic, or provide cultural and language taster classes. For a comfortable and productive learning atmosphere, we are happy to offer refreshments throughout the day and a lunch buffet that adheres to dietary requirements.

Upon completion, participants will receive a KLU Executive Education program certificate and take away valuable experiences and fond memories of KLU and Hamburg.

Academic Program

Focus of our international study trips is an academic input, which will equip students with valuable knowledge, expand their skills in multiple disciplines and promote analytical and practical approaches to current issues. We encourage and support progress with state-of-the-art learning and teaching tools. Our faculty is here to provide theoretical and practical aspects of their wide-ranging areas of expertise

The mutually agreed upon content of the academic program will be developed by KLU Faculty. Material that will be distributed to support the lecture will serve as basis for in-class discussion and practical application of theoretical concepts. The delivery can span from half-day lectures to multiple-day seminars.

Our workshops are designed to facilitate content delivery, peer- and collaborative learning as well as the implementation of newly developed skills and competencies at the workplace. KLU employs an interactive teaching approach that includes, for example, interactive discussions, case studies, exercises, presentations or role-plays. Additionally, participants will be encouraged to develop competencies of self-directed learning and to leverage the learning community created beyond the scope of the program.

It is possible to provide participants with online learning material such as pre-readings, case studies, articles, assignments or videos for preparation prior to arrival. However, as we understand a tight schedule, especially when going abroad, choosing pre-arrival preparatory tasks can be made optional.

Why choose a KLU international study trip?

KLU’s vision is to be the university for logistics and leadership driving the world’s welfare through focused research and education. Our mission is to produce state-of-the-art research of highest international standard with high impact and outreach. We provide high-standard, research-based education and prepare our students to become responsible leaders that have the knowledge, skills, and confidence to seek and create positive impact within their organizations, between organizations, on the debate in the field, and, in general, on a sustainable transformation of our global economy and society. We support the industry and society at large in successfully mastering current and future challenges, based on our research and education. Furthermore, we rely on the hanseatic characteristics of our hometown Hamburg: cosmopolitanism, reliability and networking skills. Here at KLU we value internationality and diversity as enrichment and source of inspiration, embrace fact-based data and evidence-driven decision-making.

We are a people’s place cultivating an atmosphere of collegiality and community, mutual trust and understanding, and foster ethical behavior and an innovative and entrepreneurial spirit.

With five million inhabitants, the Hamburg metropolitan area is among the biggest winners to gain from the opening up of Eastern Europe and globalization. This metropolis on the water is the most easterly of the northern seaports, making it the ideal port for Eastern Europe. As a global hub serving overseas countries, central and Eastern Europe, and the Baltic area, Hamburg benefits from its central position at the confluence of the global trade handled by European logistics.

Hamburg is also considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Its extensive stretches of water, green parks and the historic residential areas are renowned. There are many attractive possibilities for leisure activities. It is these special qualities, together with the maritime atmosphere and its proximity to the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, that make Hamburg a jewel among international cities.

KLU general information on Covid-19

Generally, we welcome groups from 10 up to 40 people for an international study trip at KLU. It is advisable, however, to consider group sizes between 20 to 30 participants at a time for a more comfortable and productive learning atmosphere and to allow more flexibility for further program components.

However, during our Covid-19 health and safety measures, we might reduce the number of participants in order to guarantee all distancing and hygiene regulations can be followed without any problems.

The academic component is mandatory to book. However, we are flexible as to the intensity of this part, whether you wish to book half-day or full-day lectures or seminars for the duration of your stay. All other program parts are optional and therefore recommendations, i.e. social program, company visits, accommodation service, catering, etc.

All our international study trips are individually designed to meet the needs of your group specifically. We can cater for a rather broad spectrum of target groups, starting from first year Bachelor degree level up to executive levels of professionals with extensive work experience.
