Brief description

Traditionally, transport and logistics companies have exchanged documents, waybills and customs documents in paper form or, more recently, through various digital means such as email. However, the lack of an integrated software solution, due to the large number of companies involved, causes errors and does not protect records against tampering. The HANSEBLOC project, funded by the German Federal Ministry for Research and Education (BMBF) aims to develop prototypes of such an integrated system using blockchain technology.

Project purpose

The goal of this project is to develop prototype applications for document exchange and contract execution using blockchain and smart contracts. An integrated software solution for this problem has not been developed yet because of the large number of companies involved with the movement of any specific item of freight. As a decentralised database without any central authority, a blockchain is well-suited to solve this problem. However, blockchain is still a young technology and requires careful analysis and evaluation to ensure that the systems developed here match the real-world processes and have practical and economical utility. In particular, HANSEBLOC aims to coordinate the development between a number of different institutions to acquire a holistic view of logistical processes, to integrate sensor data, and to allow for the creation of smart contracts readable by non-programmers.
