Learning from the very best
Now that KLU has entered its “teenage years” with the celebration of our 13th intake in the Fall of 2022 - we are reaching for the stars and want to learn from the very best researchers the world has to offer. And indeed, in academia, there’s nothing bigger nor better than a Nobel Prize. Therefore, we are starting an annual “Learning from the very best” series with speakers of the caliber of Nobel Prize Laureates.
To start our series this year, KLU together with the support of the Center for Sustainable Logistics and Supply Chains (CSLS) invited Prof. Jean Tirole, the 2014 Nobel Laureate in Economics, to give us his insights into the most important topic of our time: Climate Change. He is a professor at the Toulouse School of Economics and the chief advisor to French President Macron on the topic of climate change. The Center for Sustainable Logistics and Supply Chains (CSLS), together with our partner organization, the Kühne Center for Sustainable Trade and Logistics at the University of Zurich (Prof. Ralph Ossa), is organizing the event.
The core topic of the lecture is the political economy of climate change. Which will highlight how if we want to reduce CO2 emissions sustainably, globally coordinated measures are needed. However, how do we do that? What concrete measures are feasible, sustainable, and socially acceptable at the global level? Jean Tirole in his lecture will put these questions in the context of international cooperation, focusing on institutions, policies, and regulations.

Prof. Jean Tirole

Jean Tirole is honorary chairman of the Foundation JJ Laffont-Toulouse School of Economics (TSE), and scientific director of TSE-Partnership. He is also affiliated with MIT, where he holds a visiting position, and the Institut de France. Professor Tirole’s research covers industrial organization, regulation, finance, macroeconomics and banking, and psychology-based economics. Jean Tirole has published over two hundred articles in international reviews, as well as twelve scientific books. Published in English in 2017, his latest book entitled Economics for the Common Good is accessible to a wide audience and available in a number of other languages. He is laureate of numerous international distinctions, including the 2007 CNRS gold medal and the 2014 Sveriges Riksbank prize in economic sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel.
Livetime Achievement
Professor Jean Tirole’s research has made important contributions to the understanding of oligopolistic industries with a few powerful firms and a high degree of regulation, such as postal services and railway operations. These markets are dominated by a few influential firms, whereas for a long time research was focused on the two extreme cases of monopolies and perfect competition among many firms.
Using game theory and contract theory, Professor Tirole showed, together with his colleague Jean-Jacques Laffont, that by offering a range of cleverly chosen contracts, a regulatory authority can motivate a firm to choose the suitable contract thereby revealing private information of the firm. In this way, the regulatory authority can overcome the information asymmetry that exists between the firm and the regulatory authority that has limited insights into the cost structure of the firm.
Later work demonstrated that the duration of regulating contracts can have a large effect on the behavior of a firm. In case of short-term contracting, firms may adapt their current behavior to guarantee favorable contracts in the future. It is thus beneficial for the regulatory authorities to adapt long-term contracts if possible, or otherwise to gradually learn the firm’s cost conditions over time.
The research contributions of Professor Tirole have tremendously added to the understanding of and decision making in oligopolistic markets. He has managed to make important advancements on the topics of information asymmetry, competition, and strategic investments. His books on these topics have become an important basis for education and his research is of great practical relevance. The value of these contributions to the research field, education and practice was recognized with the Nobel prize in Economic Sciences in 2014.

Maria Besiou is Dean of Research and Professor of Humanitarian Logistics at Kühne Logistics University. She received her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering and Operations Management from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH) in Greece. She holds a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering from AUTH. Before joining KLU she worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Social Innovation Centre at INSEAD, France.

Prof. Dr. Mirjam Meijer is Assistant Professor of Operations Management at Kühne Logistics University. In her research, she focuses on inventory control and supply chain optimization and coordination problems that are based on practical challenges faced by manufacturers of high-tech products and their suppliers. She studies how a high-tech manufacturer that, due to high technical complexity, can source a required component at only a limited number of suppliers, can motivate its current supplier to invest in capacity by offering potential long-term collaboration.
