New technologies in automation, data exchange, and manufacturing are promising new opportunities to the various stakeholders in supply networks. It is hard to predict which of them will be adopted in the long term and which will not. This research project will identify and evaluate emerging trends and solutions linked to the use of smart devices in supply networks and will explore and test the options for implementation in the fast-moving consumer goods supply chain.
Professor Hoberg emphasizes that smart devices are a hot topic in supply chain innovation: “You can have an identifier, a sensor, or a camera on almost anything today. We often refer to these connected devices as the Internet of Things. However, the key challenge is to identify where in the supply chain these devices add the most value. Do I use smart devices to broadcast the location of a pallet, to measure the inventory on a store shelf or to trigger customer orders at the point of consumption? I am glad that we are able to partner with Procter & Gamble to research this fascinating topic.”
The joint research project between KLU and P&G’s Supply Network Innovation Center merges academic and practical aspects to provide a scientific and applied examination of this new field. The research team includes researchers with both academic and hands-on experience, and practitioners with a variety of educational backgrounds and working experience. This diversity will enable us to add further perspectives to the discussion.
