This year’s case will be on the humanitarian aid mission following Typhoon Haiyan, an exceptionally powerful tropical cyclone that devastated portions of Southeast Asia, particularly the Philippines, in November 8, 2013. Previous case competitions targeted logistical challenges during the Haiti Earthquake or examined the implications on the distribution chain rising from genetically modified food donations during the food crisis in South Africa.
To qualify for the case competition, the bachelor’s student or recent graduate must solve a humanitarian logistics task in advance. The applicants who submit a convincing solution to the task will be invited to participate in the case competition at KLU. On campus, two-person teams will be randomly assigned and presented with the realistic logistics task related to humanitarian aid. The teams have only a few hours to draw up and present a useful strategic solution. A jury consisting of Prof. Sandra Transchel, Prof. Maria Besiou, and a representative of a humanitarian relief organization will vet the presentations. This is an exciting task for strategists, analysts and everyone who is interested in acquiring insight into the key role logistics plays in humanitarian aid programs.
A brief email with the subject “Case Competition” to study@klu.org is sufficient to receive the case study for qualification. Applications must be submitted by April 1, 2014. The case competition itself is planned for April 12, 2014 on the Kühne Logistics University campus in Hamburg’s HafenCity (Großer Grasbrook 17, 1st floor, 20457 Hamburg). Travel expenses must be paid by the participants.
