Transport produced a total of 6.5 billion tonnes of CO2 in 2010, of which around 40% were freight-related. And the sector is still growing. In order to meet the goals of the Paris climate agreement, transport as a whole would have to drop emissions to 3 billion tonnes until 2050. A huge challenge. KLU professor Alan McKinnon, in a feature article for the latest issue of TR News magazine, takes a close look at different approaches to decarbonize the movement of freight. McKinnon discusses the contribution that freight modal shift, improved vehicle utilization and increased energy efficiency can make to cutting carbon emissions. He also suggests changes to the planning and management of transport systems in the future.
