A conference paper entitled Cost Saving Potential of Upstream Buyer Consolidation and Downstream Intermodal Rail-based Solutions in the China-Europe Container Trades won Lin the award. Together with his co-authors, Professor Harald Hjelle (Molde University College) and Professor Rickard Bergqvist (University of Gothenburg, Sweden), he explored ways of reducing logistics costs in the Asia-to-Europe container trade. Lin suggested that cross docking in China instead of Europe could lead to substantial environmental benefits and gains in efficiency. And he advocated investigating measures to facilitate the shift towards alternative logistics solutions such as buyer consolidation in detail.
Michele Acciaro, Associate Professor of Maritime Logistics at KLU, congratulated Lin on his achievements: “Lin’s paper was executed very well and touches on an important issue in international maritime transport. Research in the field of maritime transport can surely benefit from young researchers like Ning Lin.”
About the award
The KLU Young Researcher Best Paper Award is awarded to the paper that earned the highest score in the IAME Conference review process, as long as its main author is not older than 35 years at the time of the award. The award symbolizes the value KLU places on fostering emerging talents in maritime logistics. The university conferred it for the first time at the 2016 IAME conference in Hamburg.
About the IAME conference
The annual conference of the International Association of Maritime Economists (IAME) is a leading conference for academics in the field of maritime transport. KLU hosted the conference in Hamburg in 2016 and it was held in Kyoto in 2017. In 2018, the IAME conference will take place in Mombasa, Kenya.
