Abstract

The last five years have been very exciting times in the shipping industry. Almost the entire shipping business is in trouble. Today the most striking questions in risk departments of ship financing banks are: How much are we going to lose during the crisis? or: Will borrowers be able to meet year’s end? This presentation concentrates on shipping banks’ future using an artificial benchmark portfolio. The focus is on the Container over-weighted credit portfolios of the German shipping banks.
To answer the above mentioned questions, average break-even thresholds are compared to earnings for each portfolio segment according to vessel type and year of financing. The analysis shows that given some weak assumptions it is possible to determine the risk contained in banks mortgage portfolios using a purely theoretical model framework only, leading to interesting results and conclusions relevant to the whole shipping industry.
