Abstract

International shipping emits a substantial part of CO2 and sulfur emissions. If this mode of transport remains efficient per ton-km, the volume of cargo transported by sea and the relative slow adoption of maritime innovations means that it still represents a threat to the environment and human health, a threat that will increase in the coming years. This seminar presents the situation with regard to emissions from international shipping, why this issue is so difficult to deal with and what are some solution strategies. It aims to open discussions such as: How to price a ton of CO2 or sulfur?  Is IMO the right forum to address such an issue? Are strategies implemented by shipping lines cost effective?
